What does it mean that my pliers are "atramentized"?

Atramentizing is a specific phosphating process that creates a dark, rust protection coating for corrosion. While the atramentizing process is meant to protect against rust, it is not permanent and will eventually fade. Proper preventative maintenance like cleaning and oiling the tool is recommended. It is perfectly normal for the layer to fade on cutting edges.
