Why do my combination pliers have a light gap between the gripping jaws?

When designing a tool that includes two functional surfaces with different positions from the common pivot point (eg, gripping jaws at the front of the tool head and cutting edges closer toward the handles), it is impossible for both to close at the same time with the same gap. The gap for one of the functional surfaces must be prioritized.

At KNIPEX for our combination pliers, the main priority is the cutting feature. The gripping function can still be performed on items despite the jaws closing with a small gap when the tool also has a cutting function. However, the cutting function is not reliable with a small gap, as the cutting edge must close completely for thin wires.

This can be noticed when our combination pliers are used to grab paper, as the tool is manufactured to DIN ISO 5746 standard for 0.4mm thick sheet metal (approximately 0.016") while paper has an average thickness of 0.1mm (approximately 0.004").
